I thoroughly enjoyed two performances by Holy Fuck during South By Southwest. Here are some video clips I took. One is from the Wave Rooftop and the other is a complete performance of “Milkshake” in Austin’s KLRU Studio. According to Wikipedia:
“Holy Fuck is an experimental rock band from Toronto, Canada. They are a part of Dependent Music, a music label and artist collective that began in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia in 1994.
The band uses live instrumentation and miscellaneous instruments and non-instruments (including a 35 mm film sequencer, toy keyboards and toy phaser guns) to achieve electronic-sounding effects without the use of laptops or programmed backing tracks. According to Pitchfork Media, “The band was formed with the intent of creating the equivalent of modern electronic music without actually using the techniques—looping, splicing, programming and the like—of that music.”
Last year we took a road trip to the Coachella Festival in Indio, CA. One of our favorite moments was when The Nightwatchman (Tom Morello) was joined on stage by Boots Riley (of The Coup) and Perry Farrell for a cover of “This Land is your Land”. Boots’ lines are incredible, as you can see.
Note: I am using Viddler for this posting since Vimeo’s uploading tool was down. So far, I’m really liking Viddler for its ability to upload dozens of videos at once, its speed of encoding, quality, and overall ease of use. Perhaps I will start using Viddler more often to embed these videos. Check it out:
Apparently I enjoy making these video montages. Tonight I put together some video from Ice Cube’s show at South By Southwest. Seeing him live meant a lot to me, since Lethal Injection was the first CD I ever owned. His set consisted primarily of hit singles like “We Be Clubbin’”, “Today Was a Good Day”, “Check Yo’self”, and N.W.A’s classic “Straight Outta Compton”. The show was free at Auditorium Shores and Talib Kweli opened — this is why I love Austin. I will be posting a lot of these videos in the near future, since I am creating a lot of them for a site about music festivals that I am working on.
The headliners weren’t the only great performances at Lollapalooza this year. Explosions in the Sky showed the crowd how we do post-rock in Texas while The Black Keys represented Akron, Ohio with their blues rock.
We just got back from Chicago and we are happy to say that Lollapalooza kicked f’in ass. The surprise? Our favorite performance wasn’t Rage Against the Machine. Or Radiohead. Or Explosions in the Sky. Or The Black Keys. It was none other than Kanye West. Say what you want about the guy’s personality, but his performance was so over the top and full of energy that we couldn’t help but lose ourselves dancing to the flashing lights, robot voices, and the sound of massive drums while chanting “I-I go for mine, I got to shine”. Sure, there were a lot of douchebags with stupid sunglasses in the crowd, but that didn’t stop us from having the time of our lives at this show. Here are some video clips we took at the show and put together. Watch it in full screen for the best effect. Enjoy.
